Piper Hayes arrives at the remote fire lookout tower that will be her home for the season. Through the rain-streaked glass, Piper sees a man standing in the center of the clearing below the tower. He is shirtless, barefoot, utterly unbothered by the deluge or the strikes crashing around him. He looks up. Their eyes meet. Days after the storm, Piper finds offerings at the base of the tower’s stairs: strange carved bones arranged in deliberate patterns, dead predators laid out like tribute. She descends to investigate, heart hammering. The Voice in the woods returns, but now it is aggressive, desperate—mimicking her dead father’s voice, calling her name with his exact cadence, his exact warmth. The mimicry is perfect and cruel, and Piper must confront whether she is losing her mind or being hunted by something that knows her grief.

The thing in the woods tries to climb the tower struts. Kael intervenes. Piper watches from the glass as he tears the mimic apart with non-human strength.

Kael is injured from the fight with the mimic. Piper has to tend to his wounds. She discovers his blood is dark violet, and his touch causes a sensory glitch in her mind.

The forest turns hostile. The Mimics are a pack, and they want Piper. Kael reveals his true, monstrous form to her to protect the tower.
